Depending on where in Bali you are, the food varies a lot, but the one thing that never changes is how amazingly delicious it is! There are a lot of great options for vegetarians and many great restaurants to try during your visit. Here’s a quick guide to traditional and popular dishes not to miss out on, and some great restaurants to try out! ‘Cuz let’s face it, food is half the journey right?
Seminyak has the widest variety and number of restaurants; here you’ll find everything from local food to western fine dining restaurants! In Ubud there are many options as well, and here you should make sure to try Ibu Oka, famous for making Babi Guling, aka suckling pig. You can also fine restaurants overlooking rice fields! If you want seafood head out to Jimbaran Bay, known for their seafood dinners on the beach!
Traditional and popular dishes in Bali include:
Gado Gado – a mix of vegetables with peanut sauce!
Sate – Thinly sliced bits of meat on a skewed, usually coated with spices and comes with peanut sauce.
Nasi Goreng – This is Indonesian Fried Rice, I bit on the spicier side and often served with a fried egg on top.
Babi Guling – Also known as suckling pig… I know, I know. But it’s worth a try! It’s juicy and soft with a crunchy crackling. Ibu Oka in Ubud makes an amazing one!
Beef Rendang – Beef pieces that are rich in spice and cooked with coconut
Nasi Campur – A mix plate dish, usually with rice, meat and vegetables.
Tempe Manis – Basically fried tofu with lemon grass, chilli, and palm sugar.
Black rice pudding – A really nice dessert, a great combination of black rice, coconut milk and palm sugar!
Dadar Gulung – Pandan pancakes with coconut and palm sugar filling!
Fried banana – Pretty self-explanatory and for sure a must try when in Bali!
