If you have limited time in Hong Kong and need to prioritize what to do, the Ngong Ping Cable Car needs to be on your schedule. It’s a great way to get to Lantau Island and visit Big Buddha, as well as seeing Hong Kong from above. The cable cars might not be particularly cheap, but it’ll give you some of the best views of Hong Kong and the South China Sea.
The Cable Cars will take you to Lantau Island, one of the outlying islands, giving you a different experience then and lifestyle than on Hong Kong Islands or Kowloon.
How to get there
Regardless of where you’re staying, you probably won’t be too far away from an MTR station. Hop on it and get yourself to Tung Chung Station, it’s quite far out, but worth the trip. Once there, get to the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car. It will take you on a 5,7km journey to Ngong Ping Village, the home to the giant bronze Buddha.
When you’re there
The village itself is quite touristy, there are places to eat or shop some souvenirs, and the monastery at the base of the big Buddha serves a vegetarian buffet. Anyways, get yourself up the stairs to the big Buddha and enjoy the spectacular view.
When you feel like you’ve had enough of that, if you have time, take a taxi to Tai O Fishing Village. Here you get a more authentic insight into the local life, if you’re lucky you can see pink dolphins via tours or just walk around the area. To get back to Hong Kong Island or Kowloon you can take a bus and then he fairy taking you back to Central, from where you can take the MTR to wherever you’re staying.
